Your first sponsor is unlikely to be a big brand. It is far more likely to be a business near you that already knows your family or your track. Here is where to start, and what to ask for.
Start with people who already know you
Businesses your family uses. A parent's employer. The garage that services your van. The café near your track. They already trust you a little, which is the hardest part. Ask them first.
Then local businesses whose customers look like your followers
Think about who follows you: other race families, people from your town, people who like cars. Which local businesses want to reach those people? Garages, tyre fitters, car valeters, builders' merchants, trades with vans on the road, local estate agents. A business that sells to the people who see your posts gets something real from backing you.
Ask for something small first
A first sponsor does not have to fund your season. A set of tyres, an entry fee, one round, or a small monthly amount is an easier yes. Deliver well on that and the conversation next year is about more.
Product counts too
Fuel, parts, kit, servicing, printing, travel. Product support saves you money just as cash does, and some businesses find it easier to give. Treat it the same way: label the posts with #ad, thank them properly, report back.
What to avoid
- Cold messages to fifty companies at once. Ten considered asks beat a hundred copied ones.
- Asking without a price. Give a business something it can say yes to.
- Promising results. Nobody can promise a podium. Promise what you control: posts, visits, reports, effort.
- Anyone asking you to pay them to find sponsors. Be careful with services that charge up front and promise introductions.
Be ready before you ask
When a business says "send me something", you want a link ready that shows who you are, your results, your audience and your packages. See How to make your motorsport profile sponsor-ready.
Do it in VLTA
- Build your sponsor page: photos, results, audience and packages, with an enquiry form.
- Post a Partners wanted graphic so local businesses can see you are looking.
- When someone is interested, make them a proposal from your page in a few taps.
